Corroborating otolith age using oxygen isotopes and comparing outcomes to scale age: Consequences for estimation of growth and reference points in northern pike (<i>Esox lucius</i>)

چکیده

Abstract Accurate age estimates are crucial for assessing the life‐histories of fish and providing management advice, but validation studies rare many species. We corroborated with annual cycles oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O) in otoliths 86 northern pike ( Esox lucius ) from southern Baltic Sea, compared results visual scales otoliths, assessed bias introduced by different age‐estimation structures on von Bertalanffy growth models age‐structured population models. Age were accurate, while significantly underestimated older than 6 years to reference age. Asymptotic length () was larger, coefficient lower scale ages otolith estimates. Consequentially, scale‐informed overestimated maximum sustainable yield (), biomass at relative frequency trophy optimal minimum limit fishing mortality (). Using scale‐based inform regulations may therefore result conservative lost yield. The asymptotic instill unrealistic expectations potential recreational anglers targeting large pike, overestimation MSY would cause commercial fishers.

Age, growth and length at first maturity of Otolithes ruber in the Northwestern part of the Persian Gulf, based on age estimation using otolith

Estimates of age, growth parameters, length-weight relationship and length and age at first maturity of the otolithes ruber are required for fishery management. We used counting annuli on the section of sagittal otoliths to age O.ruber from the Northwest Persian Gulf in south of Iran. Estimated ages ranged from 0 to 6 years, and maximum frequency of fishes was observed in age-group 1. The val...

This is the first study of growth and age of Sardinella sindensis from coastal waters of Qeshm Island (Persian Gulf) based on the sectioned otolith reading method. In total, 128 fishes were collected randomly from purse seine commercial nets during March 2011 to February 2012. The annual formation of the growth rings were determined by counting the opaque and translucent zones occurrence at the...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
